AI is Making you Sound Like a Robot (But here’s how to fix it)

As an author, your unique voice is your greatest asset. It’s not your topic, because let's face it, almost everything has been written about before. What makes your book stand out is how you write about the topic.

But, as an editor, I’ve noticed a growing problem—over-reliance on AI tools. While I believe AI has its place in the writing and editing process, I’m seeing more and more authors use it in ways that strip their work of authenticity. The end result? A lot of manuscripts that sound robotic, impersonal, and just... the same.

Your Voice Matters More Than You Think

No one can tell your story the way you can. Readers connect with the person behind the words, and when your voice is lost, so is that connection. Your quirks, your phrasing, your personality—that’s what makes your writing compelling.

AI Isn’t a Replacement for Authenticity

If you’re using AI tools, be mindful of how much you rely on them. AI can help polish your work, but it should never replace your voice. I’ve seen countless examples where AI-generated content sounds flat because it lacks the emotional depth and nuance that only a human can bring. Personally, I would rather read something raw and real than something polished but soulless.

Use AI as a Tool, Not a Crutch

If you find writing difficult, here’s what I recommend: speak your thoughts out loud using a transcription tool like Otter.ai, then use AI to clean it up. This way, your authentic voice shines through, and you can focus on editing for clarity without losing what makes your writing uniquely yours.

Let me know in the comments—how do you feel about using AI in your writing process? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
