ghostwriter n.
One who writes for and gives credit of authorship to another.

Step into any bookstore and look around. Chances are that you will see countless autobiographies and memoirs by both high profile people and relative unknowns. Chances are also high that in many cases those stories were written at least in part by a ghostwriter. Simply put, a ghostwriter’s job is to take your thoughts and get them on paper, often without receiving any written credit for doing so. For me, ghostwriting is one of the most exciting parts of being a writer. I feel like a liaison between your mind and the page. I need to craft words in my own writing style that still sound like the person who came up with them which is fun and challenging at the same time.

Ghostwriters aren’t only useful in crafting memoirs. Ghostwriters write grants, blog posts, proposals, sales letters, basically anything written as someone other than the person given credit for it. For instance, when you get those letters from the car dealership soliciting you to come in and take advantage of low interest rates, they’re usually signed by the owner, but most likely a writer was used to create the content.

So why hire a ghostwriter? There are a number of reasons why a ghostwriter could be the link between your business and clear communication:

Experience You’re an event planner, or a designer, or a restaurant owner. You may also be a decent writer, however a ghostwriter has the skill and experience to put your words on paper in a way that draws reader interest. In addition, it’s easy for our thoughts to get jumbled and stuck in our heads. A ghostwriter knows how to ask the right questions to organize your words and communicate clearly.

Time Even if you are a great writer, if you are running a business full time you may not have the time to sit down and put together well written web content or write daily blog posts. A ghost writer takes on that sometimes time consuming task so that you can concentrate on whatever it is that you do well.

Familiarity Writing a direct mail piece is not the same as writing online content. Writing a memoir is not the same as writing a grant. The writing style of a blog post is very different than the style of a grant application. An experienced ghostwriter will know how to write within the appropriate style gaining better results for your written communication.

I offer a variety of ghostwriting services from family memoirs to blog posts. Contact me for details.
