Three Reasons That You Have a Bad Website

These days, your website is your storefront. Chances are many people are going to see your website before they ever see the front of your actual business. If you are like many small business owners, you may not have an actual storefront at all in the traditional sense.

That being said, if we put websites in the real world and you could pull up to one and walk in just like you would a store, what would your potential customers think? Would they find a place they felt comfortable walking into where they could easily find what they want and help if they need it? Or would they find a disorganized place with expired materials and a raggedy sign?

Listed below are three reasons why customers might pull up to your website and move on to the next one:

It’s not updated-We are now in August 2010. If I visit your website and the first thing I see is an announcement for an event that happened in March 2010, or worse, 2008, I’m probably going to move on. Having outdated content on your website sends the message that your business is unreliable. In a recession where businesses are closing frequently, neglecting to keep your website updated at the very least looks unprofessional and at the worst may give the impression that your company isn’t around anymore at all. At minimum, be sure to keep your website updated at least once a month.

It’s poorly designed- By poorly designed I don’t mean that you lack fancy graphics. By poorly designed I mean that it is difficult to navigate and therefore hard for potential customers to find the information they need. Make sure that the information that customers need most, your services and contact information, is easy to find.

You don’t have one- On many occasions I’ve gone online to get information about businesses in my area only to find that many of the listings do not have websites Guess what happens in those moments? I move on to a business that does. 95 percent of the time, I’m not going to call you for information. For me it is almost always more convenient to get the information that I need online so that I can follow up with an email and not subject the person on the other end to my screaming toddler in the background. Having a web designer is great, but if you can’t afford one there are many options to easily build your own website to have at least some type of online presence. Intuit websites, for example, offers templates to create and build your own website for less than $5 a month.
